"The EU is commited to protect and clean up its coasts, seas and oceans in order to protect biodiversity and ecosystems, which is our key weapon to deal with the impact of climate change. Tranformation of the marine economy is necessary for protecting our ecosystems, but also for the wealth of our coastal communities. The region of Flanders shows that a sustainable blue economy is not just a concept on paper, but an ever more tangible reality, that will help us to achieve the objectives of the European Green Deal." (EU Commissioner Virginjus Sinkevičius)
Wanting to familiarise himself with the local initiatives within the Blue Economy landscape, EU Commissioner for the Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, Virginjus Sinkevičius, paid a visit to the city of Ostend in Belgium, engaging with local stakeholders and discussing the potential of aquaculture to meet the demand for sustainable food.
