COVID-19 impacts on the MAL3 region and its local partners in COASTAL

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has put unprecedented pressure on policy- and decision-makers to keep health services functioning and to minimize the length and depth of the economic shock. Local partners of the Swedish MAL3 case have evaluated the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic as being moderate to high in this region. Although technical and consulting sectors have had to take major adaptation measures, the public, environment and research sectors have not significantly been affected by the pandemic so far.

In a preparation for the multi-actor workshop planned for January, interviews with key stakeholders were conducted. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, interviews were held online via Zoom with a few key players including the MAL4 team.

The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the lead partner for MAL6, organized the second round of multi-actor workshops where local partners and stakeholders from rural and coastal sectors discussed the pilot system dynamics model, the business roadmap and policy solutions to promote more sustainable development in the region building on coastal-rural collaboration and synergies.

MAL4's economic activities were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, in particular by the two lockdown periods (Spring and Autumn) imposed by the government. Specific aids have been put in place by the government and the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region to help companies make the transition.

An aim of the COASTAL project is to develop a better understanding of rural-coastal interactions and identify synergies between these. We do this continuously in the project period through multi-sectoral stakeholder engagement, where we have been quantifying qualitative narratives using systems dynamics.
